What is the Red-White-Red Card?

The Red-White-Red Card (named after Austria’s national flag colours) is Austria’s primary work and residence permit for skilled non-EU nationals. It is issued for 24 months and ties you to a specific Austrian employer for that period. After 21 months of employment, you can apply for the Red-White-Red Card Plus — which gives you unrestricted access to the Austrian labour market, meaning you can change employers freely.

The key feature that makes this card different from most European work permits is its transparency: if you score enough points on the official points table, you get the permit. There is no quota, no lottery, and no waiting list. The points table awards points for your education level, work experience, language skills (German and English), age, and whether your occupation is on Austria’s shortage list.

Your spouse and minor children can join you immediately on a dependent residence permit, and your spouse can work in Austria without needing a separate work permit after a short initial period.

The Four Categories — Which One Applies to You?

Category 1 — Very Highly Qualified Workers

Who: Top researchers, scientists, executives, highly specialised professionals with outstanding qualifications.
Points required: Minimum 70 out of 100
Salary: No specific minimum — but employer must pay according to collective agreement
Job offer needed: Yes
Best for Indians: Senior IT architects, research scientists, top-level executives, internationally recognised specialists

Category 2 — Skilled Workers in Shortage Occupations

Who: Professionals in officially designated shortage occupations — this is the most accessible category for most Indian professionals.
Points required: Minimum 50 points
Minimum salary (2026): €3,009 gross per month (approximately ₹2.75 lakhs/month)
Job offer needed: Yes — in a shortage occupation
Best for Indians: Software engineers, IT specialists, nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, civil and electrical engineers, data scientists, AI engineers

Category 3 — Other Key Workers

Who: Skilled professionals not in shortage occupations who have a job offer from an Austrian employer.
Points required: Minimum 55 points
Minimum salary (2026): €3,465 gross per month (approximately ₹3.16 lakhs/month)
Labour market test: Required — AMS (Public Employment Service) must confirm no equally qualified Austrian candidate is available
Best for Indians: Finance professionals, marketing specialists, supply chain managers — roles not on the shortage list but where the employer can demonstrate a genuine need

Category 4 — Graduates of Austrian Universities

Who: International students who completed their degree in Austria and want to stay and work.
Best for Indians: Indian students currently enrolled or recently graduated from Austrian universities — this is the most direct post-study work pathway in Austria, equivalent to a post-study work visa.

Austria maintains an official Mangelberufsliste (shortage occupation list) updated annually. Fields on this list attract Indian professionals most directly because they receive preferential points and lower salary thresholds:

💻  IT and Digital Technology — software developers, data engineers, AI/ML engineers, cybersecurity specialists, cloud architects, IT systems administrators

⚙️  Engineering — mechanical, electrical, civil, environmental, and structural engineers. Austria’s infrastructure investment programme and green energy transition create sustained engineering demand.

💊  Healthcare — doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists. Austria faces the same demographic-driven healthcare worker shortage as Germany — growing and structural.

🏗️  Construction and Skilled Trades — construction managers, site engineers, electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers

🔬  Life Sciences and Research — biochemists, pharmaceutical researchers, laboratory scientists. Vienna is one of Europe’s major pharmaceutical and biotech hubs.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Step 1 — Check your eligibility. Use the official points calculator at migration.gv.at to determine your category and score. This is the official Austrian government portal — no third-party tool is more accurate.

Step 2 — Attend the free webinar. Register for the ÖIF/ABA webinar on 28 September 2026 at this Zoom link — get your specific questions answered by ABA experts before spending time on the full application.

Step 3 — Register on the Work in Austria Talent Hub. Create your free profile at workinaustria.com/en/registration. Start browsing Austrian job listings and make your profile visible to employers.

Step 4 — Secure a job offer. Apply directly to Austrian employers via the Talent Hub, LinkedIn, AMS (Austria’s public employment service at ams.at/en), and company career pages. You need a confirmed offer in your shortage occupation or qualifying role before applying for the RWR Card.

Step 5 — Gather documents. Valid passport · University degree and transcripts (officially translated) · Employment contract from Austrian employer · Proof of language skills (IELTS, Goethe-Institut, etc.) · Proof of accommodation · Health insurance · Criminal record certificate · Work experience documentation

Step 6 — Apply at the Austrian Embassy in India. Applications can be submitted at the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi or — in some cases — by your Austrian employer on your behalf at the relevant Austrian authority. Application fee: approximately €160. Processing time: 6 to 12 weeks.

Step 7 — Arrive, register, and build your Austrian life. Within three days of arrival, register at the Meldeamt (registration office). Enrol in the Werte- und Orientierungskurs (values and orientation course) — mandatory for all new long-term residents. Begin German language study if not already at B1.
