What is the dMAT Test?
The dMAT stands for Digital Master Assessment Test. It is a standardised academic aptitude test that checks whether a student has the analytical and academic skills needed to successfully complete a Master's programme at a German university.
It was developed by g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung) in cooperation with German universities, with support from the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).
💡 Think of it this way: The dMAT proves to German universities that you have the academic ability to handle graduate-level studies — similar in purpose to the GRE, but designed specifically for Germany.
Why Has the dMAT Been Introduced for India?
Germany has long required Indian students to complete the APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) verification process before applying to German universities. APS checks and verifies your academic documents and qualifications.
From 2026, the dMAT has been added as a compulsory new element of this APS process. The dMAT certificate must be submitted with your APS application documents, and your APS certificate will also reference your dMAT result.
Who Needs to Take the dMAT?
Not every Indian student needs to take the dMAT. In 2026, the requirement applies only to graduates in these three fields:
⚙️ Engineering — All branches
📈 Commerce / Finance / Economics — Including Accounting
💼 Business / Management — BBA and related programmes
If your degree falls in any of these fields and you plan to begin a Master's in Germany from Summer Semester 2027 or later, you must take the dMAT with the General Academic Module as part of your APS documentation.
⚠️ Not required if your degree is in: Arts, Pure Sciences, Law, or Medicine. You are exempt from the dMAT at this introductory stage.
How is the dMAT Structured?
The dMAT consists of two modules:
Module 1
Core Module
Tests your general cognitive and analytical abilities through three subtests. It measures how you think — not what you have memorised. You cannot cram your way through this section.
Module 2
General Academic Module
Tests your ability to apply analytical skills to real academic problems. You will be given a problem scenario followed by related questions. Requires application skills — not rote knowledge.

Understanding Your dMAT Score and Certificate
Your certificate will be available to download after 12 October 2026 via the g.a.s.t. portal. It shows your results on two scales:
Score Type 1
Percentile Rank
Shows what percentage of test-takers scored at or below you. A rank of 70 means you scored higher than 70% of all participants. Universities use this to rank and shortlist applicants.
Score Type 2
dMAT Score (0 to 200)
A standardised score where 100 is the average. Reported separately for the Core Module and Subject Module. Total Score = Core + Subject combined.
✅ Your dMAT certificate has no expiry date. It is valid indefinitely. Each German university independently decides how to use dMAT results — always check your target university's specific requirements.
Which German Universities Use the dMAT?
Currently, these universities use the dMAT as a selection criterion for specific programmes:
RWTH Aachen
MSc Battery Science and Technology in Engineering
Modules: Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
Georg-August-Universität Göttingen
MSc Data Science
For Indian students going through APS, the General Academic Module applies as a standard requirement regardless of which German university you are applying to.
