Indian Scholarships 2026–27: Schemes to Check Before the Deadline
Find government scholarship opportunities, understand eligibility, prepare your documents and learn how to apply through the National Scholarship Portal.
Worried about college fees, school expenses or the cost of higher education? A scholarship could help you continue your studies without placing the entire financial burden on your family.
For the 2026–27 academic year, the Government of India’s National Scholarship Portal (NSP) lists several scholarship schemes for eligible students. Some schemes have a student application deadline of 31 October 2026.
However, not every scholarship has the same deadline or eligibility requirements. Before applying, identify the schemes that match your education level, academic record and personal circumstances.
Important deadline reminder
The NSP lists 31 October 2026 as the student application deadline for several schemes. Check the individual scheme’s current status and deadline before applying. Some opportunities are renewal-only or have different eligibility conditions.
1. What Is the National Scholarship Portal?
The National Scholarship Portal is a government platform that brings together scholarship schemes offered by central government departments, ministries and other participating authorities.
Depending on the scheme, students can use the portal to register, submit applications, check application progress and access scholarship-related information.
Instead of assuming that one scholarship suits everyone, students should explore the available schemes and read the official eligibility requirements carefully.
2. Scholarships Students Should Check for 2026–27
The following schemes appear on the official portal with a student application deadline of 31 October 2026. Their eligibility conditions differ, so check the official scheme guidelines before applying.
A. National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS)
This scheme supports eligible students from economically weaker sections and aims to reduce school dropouts after Class VIII.
Scholarship amount: ₹12,000 per year for selected eligible students, subject to the scheme’s conditions.
Who should check it? Students entering Class IX through the prescribed selection process and eligible renewal students in Classes X to XII.
Eligibility includes income and academic requirements. The scheme is intended for eligible students in government, government-aided and local body schools, subject to official rules.
B. PM-USP Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students (CSSS)
This scheme provides financial support to eligible meritorious students pursuing higher education.
Who should check it? Students who meet the scheme’s academic, income and other requirements. The 31 October 2026 deadline currently shown on NSP is for renewal applications.
Students already receiving this scholarship should check the renewal process, required academic progress and documentation. Do not assume that the renewal deadline is also a fresh-application deadline.
C. Scholarships for Students with Disabilities
NSP lists schemes for eligible students with disabilities, including pre-matric, post-matric and top-class education scholarships.
Who should check them? Students who meet the applicable disability, education, income and other scheme-specific conditions.
The required disability documentation and application procedure can vary. The portal also instructs disabled students to provide consent for sharing their UDID details through the UDID portal before submitting an NSP application.
D. Prime Minister’s Scholarship Schemes
NSP lists scholarship schemes for eligible wards of certain personnel, including Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles personnel, and wards of State or Union Territory police personnel martyred during terror or Naxal attacks.
Who should check them? Applicants who meet the specific service-related, education and other eligibility conditions.
These are not general scholarships for every student. Check the relevant scheme’s official rules and required supporting documents before applying.
Other opportunities: The portal also lists schemes such as AICTE-Swanath Scholarship Scheme and scholarship support for eligible Scheduled Tribe students. Availability, application mode and deadlines can vary. Review the live listing instead of assuming that every scheme is open for fresh applications.
3. Who Can Apply for a Scholarship?
There is no single eligibility rule for all government scholarships. Depending on the scheme, applicants may need to meet some or all of the following conditions:
- Education level: School, undergraduate, postgraduate or eligible professional studies.
- Academic performance: Minimum marks, merit ranking or a qualifying examination.
- Family income: An annual household income below the scheme’s specified limit, where applicable.
- Category or special eligibility: Requirements related to disability, community, service background or other specified circumstances.
- Institution and course: Enrolment in an eligible school, college, university or approved course.
- Renewal conditions: Existing beneficiaries may need to meet academic progress and other continuation requirements.
Meeting one condition does not automatically make you eligible. Read the full guidelines for the specific scholarship you intend to apply for.
4. Documents to Prepare Before Applying
Preparing your documents early can make the application process easier. Depending on your chosen scheme, you may need:
- Aadhaar or another accepted identity document, as required.
- One-Time Registration (OTR) details.
- Recent academic marksheets or examination results.
- Admission or enrolment details from your institution.
- Income certificate, where required.
- Caste, disability or other supporting certificates, if applicable.
- Bank account details that meet the scheme’s requirements.
- A photograph or other documents requested in the official application.
Important: This is a general preparation list, not a mandatory document list for every scheme. Follow the exact checklist displayed in the official portal and scheme guidelines.

6. Can You Apply for More Than One Scholarship?
For academic year 2026–27, NSP states that students may apply for one merit-based scholarship scheme and one or more welfare-based scholarship schemes, provided they meet the eligibility criteria of the respective schemes.
This does not mean that every combination of scholarships is permitted. Read the rules on duplicate benefits, overlapping financial assistance and other restrictions for each scheme before submitting multiple applications.
7. Common Scholarship Application Mistakes to Avoid
- Waiting until the last day to register or submit the form.
- Choosing a scheme without checking the eligibility criteria.
- Entering incorrect personal, academic or bank details.
- Uploading unclear, incomplete or incorrect documents.
- Assuming that submitting the form means the scholarship has been approved.
- Ignoring institute verification, correction requests or portal notifications.
- Paying an unofficial agent who promises guaranteed approval.
Submit your application early whenever possible. An application may still require verification after the student submission deadline, and submitting it does not guarantee selection or payment.
