What Is the AKS Graduate Fellowship?

The AKS Graduate Fellowship is offered by the Academy of Korean Studies — a government-funded national research institution in South Korea established to promote the understanding of Korean history, culture, society, and language worldwide. It is not a regular university. It is one of Asia’s most specialised and respected research bodies, funded directly by the South Korean government.

The fellowship invites international graduate students — Master’s and PhD level — to come and live in South Korea for six months to conduct supervised research. It is a non-degree programme — you do not earn a degree from it. Instead, you spend six months inside one of the best Korean Studies institutions in the world, researching your chosen topic with a dedicated professor as your guide, using world-class library resources, and building an international academic network.

For the 2026 cycle, the fellowship period runs from September 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027. The application deadline is May 8, 2026. The Academy of Korean Studies is located in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do — just outside Seoul.

What Does It Cover — Full Benefits

This fellowship covers nearly all of your expenses during the six-month stay. Here is exactly what you receive:

Monthly Stipend

750,000 Korean Won per month — approximately ₹46,000 per month. This is provided every month for the full six months of the fellowship to help cover your daily living expenses including food, local transport, and personal costs.

Free Accommodation

On-campus dormitory accommodation at the Academy of Korean Studies is provided completely free of charge for the entire six-month duration. You do not pay rent. You do not need to find housing.

Return Economy Class Airfare

Economy class return airfare from your home country to South Korea is covered at actual expense — up to a maximum of 2,060,000 KRW (approximately ₹1.27 lakhs) per person. This covers your flight to Korea and back home after the fellowship ends.

Free Korean Language Classes

Korean language courses are available free of charge throughout your stay. This is a valuable bonus — learning Korean significantly enhances your research quality and your personal experience living in South Korea.

World-Class Library and Research Access

Full access to the AKS library and the Jangseogak archives — one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of Korean historical documents, records, maps, and manuscripts. Researchers from around the world travel to AKS specifically to access these resources.

Academic Supervision and Global Network

You are assigned a dedicated AKS professor who guides your research throughout the six months. You also join an international academic community of fellows from around the world — building a global professional network in Korean Studies and related disciplines.

Who Can Apply — Eligibility

Nationality

Open to all nationalities worldwide. Indian students are fully eligible. You must be a foreign national, or a Korean national who completed their entire education — from school through university — outside South Korea.

Academic Level

You must meet one of the following conditions as of September 1, 2026:

✓  Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree programme at a university outside South Korea
✓  Currently enrolled in a PhD programme at a university outside South Korea
✓  Completed all coursework for a Master’s degree and currently in ABD status (All But Dissertation) at a university outside South Korea

Research Topic

Your research topic must be related to Korea or Korean Studies. This includes Korean history, society, culture, language, politics, economy, religion, arts, diaspora, international relations, or any other Korea-related field in the humanities or social sciences.

Korean Language

Korean language proficiency is considered an advantage but is not mandatory. Many fellows work entirely in English. No IELTS or TOEFL is required to apply.

Who cannot apply: Anyone who received an AKS fellowship within the past three years from the application date. Anyone currently under disciplinary action from a Korean government body. Anyone who plans to hold another fellowship simultaneously during the same period. PhD students who have completed all requirements including their dissertation are not eligible under the graduate fellowship — they should look at the separate AKS Fellowship for Korean Studies for PhD holders and researchers.

Research Fields and What You Will Do

The fellowship is open to research in any area related to Korea across the humanities and social sciences. Common research areas pursued by past AKS fellows include:

Korean history — ancient, Joseon, colonial period, modern history

Korean society — family structure, urbanisation, gender, education, religion

Korean culture — literature, arts, music, film, K-culture and Hallyu

Korean language and linguistics

Korean politics and international relations — including Korea-India relations

Korean economy — development model, chaebols, trade, economic policy

Korean diaspora — Korean communities in India, Southeast Asia, the Americas, and Europe

What you will do day to day: You conduct your own research under the supervision of your assigned AKS professor. You use the AKS library, Jangseogak archives, and research databases. You attend academic seminars and lectures. You participate in the Korean language programme if needed. And at the end of your six months, you present your research findings at an AKS academic colloquium and submit a written research paper before departing.

Many AKS fellowship alumni have gone on to publish books, journal articles, and dissertations based on their AKS research. Some have secured faculty positions at universities. The fellowship is recognised and respected in academic circles across Asia, Europe, and North America.

Documents Required

Prepare all of these before you begin your online application. All documents must be in English or Korean. If your original documents are in another language they must be accompanied by a certified translation.

✓  Completed online application form — filled through the official AKS application portal at gradaks.recruiter.co.kr

✓  Academic CV — in English or Korean. Include your educational background, research experience, publications, presentations, and academic awards.

✓  Research proposal — a clear and detailed plan of the research you intend to conduct during the six months. This is one of the most important parts of your application. It must show a genuine connection to Korean Studies and demonstrate academic depth.

✓  AKS Professor nomination form — you must select one AKS professor whose academic specialisation aligns with your research topic. You must fill in this professor’s details on the application. Applications without a professor selected are automatically disqualified.

✓  Letters of recommendation — typically two letters from your current academic supervisor or professors who know your research well. The recommender must send the letter directly — you cannot send it yourself from your personal email.

✓  Academic transcripts — from your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees as applicable. Official transcripts or certified copies.

✓  Enrolment certificate — proof that you are currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD programme at your university as of September 1, 2026.

✓  Copy of passport — valid for at least one year beyond the fellowship end date of February 28, 2027.

✓  Permanent residence document abroad — required only for overseas Koreans applying under the overseas Korean eligibility category. Not required for Indian students.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Step 1 — Identify Your AKS Supervisor Before Applying

Before you do anything else, visit aks.ac.kr and look at the faculty list of AKS professors. Find a professor whose research specialisation closely matches your research topic. This is the most important step — your application will be disqualified if you do not select a professor. You can also email the professor in advance to introduce your research and check if they are willing to supervise you.

Step 2 — Prepare Your Research Proposal

Write a clear research proposal — your topic, your research questions, your methodology, and why this research needs to be conducted at AKS specifically. The proposal should be in English or Korean. Take this seriously — it is what the selection committee evaluates most carefully. A vague or generic proposal will not be shortlisted.

Step 3 — Request Recommendation Letters Early

Contact your academic supervisor or recommending professors immediately. Give them enough time to write a strong, specific letter about your research ability. They must send the letter directly from their institutional email — not through you. Give them the AKS recommendation letter format and deadline at least two weeks before May 8.

Step 4 — Create Your Account and Apply Online

Visit gradaks.recruiter.co.kr. Create your account. Fill in all personal and academic details accurately. Upload all required documents in PDF or Word format. Select your AKS professor. Review your entire application before submitting. Hard copy submissions are not accepted — everything must be submitted online.

Step 5 — Submit Before May 8, 2026

Submit your application well before the May 8 deadline. Applications received after the deadline are not considered under any circumstances. There is no application fee. If you have any questions, contact the AKS directly at grad_fellowship@aks.ac.kr or call +82-31-730-8188.

Why Indian Students Should Apply

India and South Korea have a growing bilateral relationship — economically, diplomatically, and culturally. Samsung, LG, Hyundai, and Kia all have major India operations. India-Korea trade is growing. Korean culture — K-pop, K-drama, K-beauty, K-food — has a massive and growing following in India. Research connecting India and Korea is exactly the kind of cross-cultural, relevant scholarship that AKS values highly.

For Indian students in History, International Relations, Asian Studies, Cultural Studies, Sociology, Linguistics, or Political Science at Master’s or PhD level — the AKS Graduate Fellowship is a genuine career accelerator. Six months of funded research in South Korea, access to one of the world’s best Korean Studies libraries, a publication opportunity, and a globally recognised fellowship on your academic CV.

The fellowship has zero application fee, requires no IELTS, and covers your flight, accommodation, and monthly living costs. There is no financial barrier to applying. The only barrier is a strong research proposal and a matching AKS professor — both of which you can prepare in time before May 8.
