Study in Lithuania for Indian Students 2026 — Complete Guide to Universities, Fees, Visa and Life After Graduation

Study in Lithuania for Indian students is one of the most underrated opportunities in European education today. This small Baltic country offers EU-quality degrees at tuition fees starting from just ₹2 lakhs per year — a fraction of what you would pay in the UK, Germany, or Australia. Lithuania is a full EU and Schengen member, your degree is recognised across all 27 European countries, and after graduation you get a 12-month permit to find work in Europe. Over 800 Indian students currently study here, and that number grows 20% every year. This complete guide covers everything: the best universities, what you will pay, how to apply, the visa process through VFS, scholarships, living costs, and what happens after you graduate.

Quick facts for Indian students: Tuition from €1,000–€5,000/year (₹91,000–₹4.5L) • Living costs €300–€700/month • 300+ English-taught programmes • 22 universities • Visa processing 15–30 working days • Work 20 hours/week during studies • 12-month post-study job search permit • PR pathway after 5 years

Why Study in Lithuania — 8 Reasons That Matter for Indian Students

1. EU-Quality Education at Near-Indian Prices

Lithuania is a full member of the European Union. Its universities follow EU academic standards and quality frameworks. Tuition fees start from just ₹91,000 per year for some programmes and go up to ₹4.5 lakhs per year for most degrees — a tiny fraction of what the UK (₹25–45 lakhs/year) or Australia (₹20–35 lakhs/year) costs. You get European education quality without the European price tag.

2. Degree Recognised Across All 27 EU Countries

A degree from a Lithuanian university is recognised across the entire European Union and in most countries worldwide. You are not limited to working in Lithuania — your qualification is valid in Germany, Netherlands, France, Sweden, Ireland, and all other EU member states.

3. Over 300 English-Taught Programmes

You do not need to know Lithuanian. Over 300 programmes across 22 universities are taught entirely in English at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD level. All major universities — Vilnius University, KTU, VILNIUS TECH, VMU, LSMU, ISM — offer English-medium programmes. Learning basic Lithuanian is helpful for daily life but is not required for your degree.

4. Schengen Area Access

Lithuania is part of the Schengen Area. As a student with a valid residence permit, you can freely travel across 26 Schengen countries — Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, and more — during your studies without needing a separate visa for each country.

5. 12-Month Post-Study Work Permit

After completing your degree in Lithuania, you can apply for a 12-month Temporary Residence Permit for job search. This gives you a full year to find a job in Lithuania’s growing tech, fintech, and business sector — with no employer sponsorship required during the search period.

6. Safe, Affordable, Student-Friendly Cities

Vilnius (the capital) and Kaunas (the second city) are compact, safe, and easy to navigate. Student accommodation costs €70–€200 per month in university dormitories. Total monthly living costs of €450–€700 (₹41,000–₹64,000) cover rent, food, transport, and daily needs — among the lowest in the entire EU.

7. Work 20 Hours Per Week During Studies

Non-EU international students — including Indian students — can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays. Average student wages of €5–€8 per hour mean monthly earnings of €300–€640 can cover most or all living expenses.

8. Growing Indian Community and Welcoming Environment

Around 800–1,000 Indian students currently study in Lithuania, and the number grows 20% every year. Lithuanian society is widely reported to be welcoming and friendly toward international students. Over 11,560 international students from 90+ countries studied in Lithuania in the 2025/26 academic cycle — a record high.

Popular Courses and Fields of Study

Lithuania excels in several fields that are highly sought-after by Indian students:

IT and Software Engineering

Lithuania has a booming tech ecosystem — Hostinger, Vinted, Nord Security, and major fintech firms including Revolut, Barclays, and Nasdaq have significant operations here. KTU and Vilnius University are the top choices for IT and software programmes.

Medicine and Dentistry

LSMU’s English-medium Medicine and Dentistry programmes are WHO and NMC recognised. This is the primary reason many Indian students choose Lithuania — an EU medical degree at ₹10–13 lakhs per year versus ₹40–80 lakhs for equivalent programmes in private Indian medical colleges.

Business, Finance and Management

ISM University (AMBA accredited), MRU, and VMU offer strong English-medium programmes in Business Administration, International Business, Finance, and MBA. ISM’s corporate connections in the Baltic region are particularly strong.

Engineering

KTU and VILNIUS TECH are the leaders for Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, and Environmental Engineering. Both universities have strong industry links ensuring practical training and employability.

Law and International Relations

MRU and Vilnius University offer English-medium programmes in Law, International Law, Cybersecurity Law, and International Relations. These programmes focus on EU and international frameworks — highly valuable for careers in global institutions.

Life Sciences and Biotechnology

Lithuania has a strong research base in biotechnology and life sciences supported by Vilnius University and LSMU. Many PhD programmes in this field are fully funded with tuition waivers and monthly stipends.

Tuition Fees and Total Cost of Study

Here is what you will realistically pay as an Indian student in Lithuania:

Annual Tuition Fees

Bachelor’s Degree

€1,600 to €5,300 per year (approximately ₹1.5 lakhs to ₹4.8 lakhs)

Master’s Degree

€2,200 to €6,500 per year (approximately ₹2 lakhs to ₹5.9 lakhs)

Medicine and Dentistry (LSMU)

PhD

€7,000 to €8,400 per year — but many PhD programmes are fully funded with stipends

Application Fee

Approximately €100 at most universities. One-time registration fee of €50 at some institutions.

Monthly Living Costs

Accommodation: €70–€200 per month in university dormitories. Private apartments: €250–€500 per month. Dormitories are the most affordable and most Indian students start there.

Food: €150–€250 per month cooking your own meals. Eating out occasionally costs €5–€10 per meal. Student canteens in universities offer meals for €3–€5.

Transport: €20–€30 per month on public transport. Vilnius and Kaunas have excellent bus and trolleybus networks. Student discounts available.

Total monthly budget: €350–€750 per month (₹32,000–₹68,000) covers all expenses comfortably for a student in Lithuania.

Compare the total cost: A non-medical programme at a top Lithuanian university for 2 years (Master’s) including tuition and living costs is approximately ₹10–15 lakhs total. The same Master’s in the UK costs ₹25–40 lakhs. In Germany (with living costs) approximately ₹15–20 lakhs. Lithuania is the most affordable EU study destination for Indian students.

How to Apply to Lithuanian Universities — Step by Step

Applications typically open in January and deadlines fall between May and June for the September/October intake. Start early — at least 6 months before your intended start date.

Step 1 — Research and Shortlist Programmes

Browse all English-taught programmes at studyin.lt — the official Lithuanian study abroad portal. Filter by field, level, and university. Read programme descriptions, check tuition fees, and note application deadlines.

Step 2 — Prepare Your Documents

Gather your academic transcripts and certificates (Class 10, 12, Bachelor’s if applicable), IELTS or TOEFL score report, passport copy, Statement of Purpose or motivation letter, and CV or resume. Some universities require letters of recommendation.

Step 3 — Apply Online to Your Chosen University

All Lithuanian universities accept online applications through their own portals. Pay the application fee (approximately €100). Applications for Bachelor’s programmes go through the Lithuanian Higher Institutions Association for Organizing Joint Admission — check this specific deadline carefully.

Step 4 — Receive Admission Letter and Pay Tuition Deposit

Upon acceptance, you receive an official admission letter. To confirm your place, pay the first year tuition fee or a deposit as instructed by the university. Keep this payment confirmation — you need it for your visa application.

Step 5 — Apply for Your Visa

Once you have your admission letter and tuition payment proof, you can apply for the National Visa (Type D) through VFS Global. The full visa process is explained in the next section.

Lithuania Student Visa — Type D National Visa via VFS Global

Indian students studying in Lithuania for more than 90 days must apply for a National Visa (Type D) — a long-stay visa for studies. This is not a Schengen tourist visa. It is a student-specific national visa applied for through VFS Global in India.

Official warning from the Lithuanian Embassy: ALL visa appointments are handled ONLY by VFS Global at NO COST. No local agents have the authority or are in a position to influence or schedule visa appointments. Do not pay anyone claiming they can arrange your Lithuanian visa. Always obtain an official receipt for any money paid for visa services.

Documents Required for Type D Student Visa

✓  Valid passport — valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned stay. Must have been issued within the last 10 years. Minimum 2 blank pages.

✓  Official Admission Letter from your Lithuanian university confirming your admission, programme, and study duration.

✓  Proof of tuition fee payment — receipt showing you have paid your first year’s fees to the university.

✓  Financial proof — bank statements showing €4,680 to €6,000 per year (approximately ₹4.25–5.5 lakhs) available. This demonstrates you can cover living costs. Provide 6 months of bank statements. Sponsorship letters from parents with their bank statements are acceptable.

✓  Health Insurance — minimum coverage of €30,000. Must cover emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation, and repatriation. Can be purchased from Indian or international insurance providers.

✓  Proof of accommodation — university dormitory confirmation or private rental agreement in Lithuania.

✓  Passport-size photographs — 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm, colour, white background, face occupying 70–80% of the photo.

✓  Completed visa application form — available at the VFS Global Lithuania portal. Must be signed by the applicant. All details must match your passport exactly.

✓  Statement of Purpose — a clear written explanation of why you chose Lithuania and this specific programme, your academic background, and your career plans after graduation.

VFS Visa Application Process — Step by Step

Step 1: Go to the official VFS Global Lithuania portal at visa.vfsglobal.com/one-pager/lithuania/india/english/. Select the visa type — National Visa (D) for students.

Step 2: Book an appointment at the nearest VFS Visa Application Centre. You must apply in person — biometric data (fingerprints and a digital photograph) is collected at the appointment. Book at least 3 weeks before your intended travel date.

Step 3: Attend your appointment with all original documents and photocopies. Pay the visa fee of approximately €80 (children 6–12 years: €40). VFS service charge of approximately ₹1,788 per applicant is payable separately. Fees are non-refundable if the visa is refused.

Step 4: Processing time is 15–30 working days from the date the Lithuanian Embassy receives your documents. Applications submitted at the Delhi centre are processed online and take fewer days.

Step 5: Track your application at VFS Global’s Track Your Application page using your Application Reference Number. Collect your documents and passport from VFS in person or via their courier service.

After arrival — Temporary Residence Permit (TRP): If your studies last more than one year, you must apply for a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) after arriving in Lithuania through the MIGRIS system (migris.lt). The TRP is issued for up to 2 years and is renewable. Apply well in advance — the process can take up to 4 months.

Living in Lithuania — What Indian Students Can Expect

Lithuania is a small country of 2.8 million people, and Vilnius and Kaunas are both compact, manageable cities that students typically fall in love with quickly. Vilnius has a beautifully preserved Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), excellent public transport, reliable internet, and a vibrant café and cultural scene. Kaunas is known for its Art Deco architecture and lively student atmosphere.

The climate is four-seasons European — expect cold winters (sometimes below -10°C) and warm summers (up to 25–30°C). Indian students typically adapt well, particularly those from North India who are familiar with cold winters. Stock up on warm clothing before arrival in October.

Indian food and grocery stores are available in Vilnius and Kaunas, and the Indian community in both cities is welcoming and well-connected. Student communities on WhatsApp and Facebook groups for Indian students in Lithuania are active and helpful for practical day-to-day questions.

Lithuania uses the Euro as its currency — no separate currency conversion needed, and your card works across all 20 Eurozone countries seamlessly. English is widely spoken in cities and on campuses, and university administrative processes are all conducted in English for international programmes.

Work During Studies and After Graduation

During studies: Non-EU international students can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holiday periods. No separate work permit is required — your student residence permit covers you. Average wages are €5–€8 per hour. Common student jobs include IT support, tutoring, customer service, hospitality, and part-time roles at international companies. Monthly part-time earnings of €300–€640 can cover most or all your living costs.

After graduation — 12-month job search permit: Non-EU students who complete their studies in Lithuania can apply for a Temporary Residence Permit valid for 12 months specifically for job searching and employment. Once you find a job, you can start working immediately — no additional permit required. This TRP is applied for through the MIGRIS system online.

After finding employment: Once employed, you transition to a work-based Temporary Residence Permit (valid up to 2 years, renewable). Lithuania’s tech, fintech, and business sector employs graduates well — top employers include Vinted, Hostinger, Nord Security, Revolut, Barclays, Western Union, Nasdaq, and Thermo Fisher. Graduate salaries in IT range from €1,800–€3,500 per month; Business and Finance from €1,200–€2,500 per month.

EU Blue Card: Graduates earning above €2,400 per month can apply for the EU Blue Card — a special high-skilled worker permit that gives EU-wide mobility after just 18 months of employment. This is a pathway to working anywhere in the European Union.

Permanent Residency and Citizenship: After residing legally in Lithuania for 5 consecutive years, you can apply for Permanent Residency. Study years count at 50% towards this requirement. After 10 years of permanent residence, Lithuanian citizenship becomes possible. The PR approval rate in 2024 was approximately 88% for those who met requirements — a realistic long-term pathway for Indian graduates who want to build a life in Europe.
