What Is CUET — Full Form, Purpose and Why It Matters

CUET full form is Common University Entrance Test. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and introduced in 2022 as India’s single centralised entrance exam for undergraduate admissions at central universities — replacing the old system where board exam marks determined university seats.

Before CUET, Delhi University cutoffs went above 99% — making board marks-based admissions unfair, unequal, and inaccessible for students from state boards and rural areas. CUET replaced that system entirely. Today, every student — regardless of which board they appeared in, which state they studied in, or what score they got in boards — competes on the same standardised platform for the same central university seats.

CUET is now compulsory for all 44 central universities — including Delhi University, JNU, BHU, Jamia Millia Islamia, AMU, and Allahabad University. As of 2026, over 280 universities accept CUET scores — including state and private universities. In 2026, 15,68,866 candidates registered for CUET UG, making it the largest undergraduate entrance exam in India by registration numbers.

The exam is conducted by NTA in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode across more than 4,500 centres in India and 14 international cities across 13 countries including Dubai, Singapore, and Washington DC. On Day 1 alone — May 11, 2026 — over 1.24 lakh students appeared. The exam runs across 35 shifts over 21 days from May 11 to May 31.

CUET 2026 Eligibility Criteria — Who Can Apply

The CUET 2026 eligibility criteria are among the most inclusive of any entrance exam in India:

Educational qualification for CUET UG: Must have passed or be appearing in Class 12 (10+2) from any recognised Central or State Board — CBSE, ICSE, state board, open board, any recognised board. Students appearing in board exams in 2026 can apply — subject to meeting eligibility at time of university admission.

Minimum marks for CUET eligibility: No universal minimum percentage prescribed by NTA. However, individual universities set their own minimum eligibility percentage. Check each target university’s specific requirements.

Age limit for CUET 2026: No age limit. NTA has not prescribed any age restriction. Candidates of any age can appear provided they meet educational requirements.

Nationality: Indian nationals are eligible. NRI, OCI, and PIO candidates can also apply for CUET UG. International CUET centres are available in 14 cities across 13 countries.

Number of attempts: No restriction on CUET attempts across years. You can appear every year until you secure your target admission.

CUET reservation criteria: OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, EWS 10%, PwD 5% as per Government of India norms. Reserved category candidates also receive applicable relaxation in qualifying marks at participating universities.

CUET 2026 Exam Pattern — Sections, Marks and Marking Scheme

The CUET 2026 exam pattern has three sections. You do not appear for all three — you select what is required for your chosen universities and programmes:

Section 1 — Language Test (Section 1A and 1B)

Section 1A — 13 languages: English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, Odia, Urdu, Assamese. Duration: 45 minutes. 40 questions, attempt 35. Maximum marks: 175.

Section 1B — 20 additional languages for students whose medium is not covered in 1A. Same duration and format. English is the most preferred CUET 2026 language — selected by the highest number of registered candidates.

Section 2 — Domain Specific Subjects

23 domain subjects available in 2026 (down from 27 — Entrepreneurship, Teaching Aptitude, Fashion Studies, Tourism, Legal Studies, and Engineering Graphics discontinued). Choose up to 6 subjects maximum. Each subject: 45 minutes, 50 questions, attempt 40. Marking: +5 correct, −1 wrong. Maximum 200 marks per subject.

Available domain subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, History, Political Science, Geography, Sociology, Psychology, Computer Science, Physical Education, Environmental Studies, Hindi, Sanskrit, and others.

Key rule: Register only for subjects required by your target universities. On average, each CUET 2026 candidate selected 4.31 subjects. Adding unprepared subjects risks negative marking damage.

Section 3 — General Aptitude Test (GAT)

Duration: 60 minutes. 50 questions — all must be attempted (no choice). Maximum marks: 250. Required by most universities for BBA, BCom, and general management programmes.

GAT sections: General Knowledge and Current Affairs (May 2025–May 2026) • Quantitative Reasoning (Class 10 Maths) • Logical Reasoning (analytical, argument-based) • General Mental Ability (puzzles, series). In 2026, Logical Reasoning has increased to 12–15 questions from 8–10 in previous years. Data Interpretation increased 60% over past cycles.

2026 CUET marking scheme: +5 for every correct answer. −1 for every wrong answer. 0 for unattempted. This applies to all sections. Strategic skipping is better than random guessing.

CUET 2026 Syllabus — Subject-Wise What to Study

The CUET 2026 syllabus is the most important thing to understand before starting preparation. The single most critical fact: domain subject syllabus is based entirely on NCERT Class 12 textbooks. This is confirmed by student feedback from CUET 2026 Day 1 — most questions were directly from NCERT, and the paper was described as easy to moderate when students were well prepared.

Domain Subjects Syllabus — NCERT Class 12

Physics: All NCERT Class 12 chapters — Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetism, Optics, Dual Nature, Atoms, Semiconductors. Conceptual and application-based. Students who read NCERT carefully find the paper manageable.
Chemistry: All Class 12 NCERT — Solid State, Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Surface Chemistry, p-block, d-block, Biomolecules, Polymers. Assertion-reason and application questions common in 2026.
Biology: Full Class 12 NCERT — Reproduction, Genetics, Evolution, Human Health, Biotechnology, Ecology. PCB students report Biology as one of the more straightforward domain papers.
Mathematics: All Class 12 NCERT — Relations, Functions, Matrices, Continuity, Integration, Application of Derivatives, Vectors, Probability. CUET Maths is time-consuming — many students report time management as the key challenge.
Accountancy: Rated as easy — direct NCERT theory questions. Partnership accounts and company accounts are high-weightage.
Business Studies and Economics: Easy to moderate — mostly passage and theory-based from NCERT Class 12.

Language Section Syllabus

No grammar syllabus to memorise. The language section tests reading comprehension through factual, literary, and narrative passages of 300 to 400 words. Questions test main idea identification, vocabulary in context, inference, and author’s tone. English paper in 2026 was rated moderate — grammar and vocabulary questions were significant. Reading quality English newspapers for 3 to 4 months improves performance more than any textbook.

General Aptitude Test (GAT) Syllabus

Current Affairs (May 2025–May 2026): National and international events, government schemes, awards, appointments, sports, science, environment. GK questions in 2026 were fact-based and easy.
Quantitative Aptitude: Class 10 Maths — percentages, profit-loss, ratio, time-speed-distance, data interpretation. Quantitative section was easy in 2026 but some questions involved lengthy calculations.
Logical Reasoning: Series, syllogisms, coding-decoding, blood relations, seating arrangement, and puzzle-based patterns. Rated moderate to difficult in 2026. This section has increased in weightage year on year.
Data Interpretation: Charts, graphs, and tables. Increased 60% in importance from 2023 to 2026 — prepare this specifically.

CUET 2026 Registration Process — How to Apply

CUET 2026 registration is closed. CUET 2027 registration is expected to open in January 2027 at cuet.nta.nic.in. Here is the complete step-by-step CUET registration process — so you are ready when it opens:

Step 1 — New Registration: Visit cuet.nta.nic.in. Click New Registration. Enter your name (as in Class 10 certificate), date of birth, mobile number, email ID. Create a password. A system-generated application number is issued — save it.

Step 2 — Fill Application Form: Log in. Fill personal details, academic qualifications, address. Select your subjects carefully — which languages, which domain subjects, whether you need the General Aptitude Test. Subject choices must match what your target university programmes require.

Step 3 — Upload Documents: Passport-size photograph (recent, clear face, white background). Class 10 marksheet. Category or PwD certificate if applicable. Ensure all files meet the size and format requirements — incorrectly formatted uploads are a common reason for rejection.

Step 4 — Select Exam City: Choose up to four preferred exam city options in order of preference. CUET 2026 allocated 96.6% of candidates their preferred city — apply early for best city allocation chances.

Step 5 — Pay Application Fee: Online payment via Credit Card, Debit Card, Net Banking, or UPI. Fee varies by number of subjects selected and category. Save payment receipt.

Step 6 — Correction Window: NTA opens a brief correction window after registration closes. Use it to fix any errors in subject selection or personal details. Do not leave corrections for the last day. Save all confirmation copies.

CUET 2026 Preparation Strategy — Section by Section

Domain Subjects — NCERT is Everything

Day 1 student feedback from CUET 2026 confirmed: most questions are directly from NCERT Class 12. Read each chapter thoroughly — not just headings and summaries. Focus on understanding, not memorisation. After each chapter, solve CUET-pattern passage and application questions. Time yourself strictly — 45 minutes for 40 questions is fast. The most common mistake is spending too long on one difficult question and running out of time.

General Aptitude Test — Build Skills Over Months

Current Affairs cannot be crammed in the last week. Read one quality newspaper daily — build a running notes document throughout your preparation period. GK questions in 2026 were fact-based and easy for prepared students. Quantitative Aptitude is Class 10 Maths — revise percentages, ratios, data interpretation. Logical Reasoning is now 12 to 15 questions — rated moderate to difficult in 2026. Practice 10 reasoning questions daily.

Negative Marking — The Most Important Strategy

−1 for every wrong answer. This is how most students damage their scores. The CUET 2026 negative marking rule means random guessing costs you. If you can eliminate 2 of 4 options, attempting is statistically worth it. If you cannot eliminate any option — skip. Attempted but wrong costs you more than unattempted. Most students who score poorly in CUET do so through reckless guessing, not poor subject knowledge.

Subject Selection — Quality Over Quantity

Most students need 3 to 4 subjects — English + 2 domain subjects + General Aptitude Test for BBA and BCom programmes. The average CUET 2026 candidate selected 4.31 subjects. Do not register for subjects you have not prepared. A low score in any registered subject goes into your profile even if the target university does not need that subject.

Mock Tests and Previous Year Papers

Start mock tests 3 months before the exam. Take one full mock per week under timed conditions. Analyse every wrong answer after each mock — understanding why you got it wrong builds more skill than solving additional questions. Download official CUET previous year question papers from cuet.nta.nic.in and practice with actual NTA question formats.

CUET 2026 Results and Cutoff — What to Expect

CUET 2026 result date: Expected first week of July 2026. Check at cuet.nta.nic.in using your application number and date of birth. Your scorecard shows section-wise scores, overall score, and percentile. There is no pass or fail in CUET — universities use your score to prepare their own merit lists.

CUET 2026 cutoff: University-specific cutoffs are expected in the first week of August 2026. Based on previous years, top DU colleges like SRCC, Miranda House, St. Stephen’s, Hindu, and Hansraj require near-perfect CUET scores in popular programmes. JNU, BHU, and AMU cutoffs are lower but still competitive. Check each university’s official website from July onwards for their specific merit list and admission schedule.

CUET counselling 2026: There is no centralised CUET counselling process. Each participating university independently releases its own merit list, application form, and admission timeline on its own website. You must apply separately to each university you want to consider. Monitor each university’s official website from July 2026 onwards.

CUET 2026 Admit Card and Exam Day Guidelines

CUET 2026 admit card was released on May 5, 2026. Download it from cuet.nta.nic.in using your application number and password. The admit card contains your exam date, subject, shift timing, exam centre address, and reporting time. Carry the admit card to the exam along with a valid government-issued photo ID — Aadhaar, Passport, or Voter ID.

CUET 2026 exam day instructions: Report to the exam centre at least 30 minutes before the shift start time. Carry the printed admit card — screenshots on mobile are generally not accepted. No electronic devices, calculators, or books allowed inside. Dress code advisory issued by NTA — avoid heavy jewellery and full-sleeved clothing to avoid delays at security. Read your admit card instructions carefully before exam day.

Top Colleges Accepting CUET 2026 Scores

State and private universities — 280+ total: Many state universities and select private universities now accept CUET scores. Some use it as a direct admission criterion, others alongside their own process, or for scholarship consideration. Always verify each university’s specific 2026 admission policy at the university’s official website before applying.
